College football is back, and so is the College Football Researchers Association top 25 poll.  As most of you know, this poll was started last year under the same name of a formerly prestigious poll from the 1980s and 90s.  With the permission and involvement of past members, this poll has been re-energized, and I’m happy to announce  that its re-emergence has been officially been acknowledged by the NCAA.  Here is a link to the 2010 NCAA Football Record:  http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/football_records/DI/2010/2010FBS.pdf.  You will see that on page 68 the origins of the College Football Researchers Association poll are described, and it is mentioned in the last sentence that the poll was restarted in 2009.  You can also see from the chart immediately above the poll that we are currently one of the only seventeen active polls officially acknowledged by the NCAA.  Furthermore, because of the predated national champions which the original CFRA elected, there are only five national polls that have elected more national champions than we have.

The CFRA poll has expanded in size this year and is ready to publish its 2010 preseason rankings.  One of the most interesting aspects of this preseason poll  is that the poll includes the exact same 25 teams which are ranked in Coaches preseason poll.  On othe other hand, one major disparity between this poll and the AP and Coaches  polls is the ranking of North Carolina.  The Tar Heels are ranked 18th in both the AP and Coaches but are ranked as low as 24th in this poll.  Also, unlike several other national polls, Southern Cal is eligible to be ranked and has received several top 25 votes, as you will see below.  Here are this year’s CFRA preseason rankings.
