2008 CFRA National Champion- Florida
January 9, 2011 | Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Florida Gators as its 2008 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Florida (13-1)- 8 votes
- Utah (13-0)- 7 votes
It just seems fitting that the the 2008 CFRA poll, the final edition in this retrospective championship project, ends up with the closest vote of all. A one-loss Florida squad edged out an unbeaten Utah team by one single vote! The final 2008 AP Poll also ranked Florida at # 1 and Utah at 2, but the Gators enjoyed a more comfortable first-place margin in those rankings. Here, the CFRA came within a vote of joining the Anderson & Hester Rankings, the Massey College Football Ratings, and the Wolfe Rankings as the only NCAA-recognized polls to elect Utah as the 2008 champ. Instead, the CFRA once again crowned the BCS Title Game Winner as its national champion.
Here is a brief summary of the results of the CFRA’s retrospective poll project. Between the years of 1993 and 2008 the CFRA crowned every consensus # 1 team as its national champ. For the two seasons where college football saw split champions, the CFRA voted alongside the AP Poll on one occasion (Michigan, 1997) and the Coaches Poll on the other (LSU, 2003). The CFRA’s crowning of LSU as its 2003 champ was an extremely noteworthy event, as it marks the first-time since 1954 that the CFRA sided with the Coaches in a split championship situation.
I hope you enjoyed the CFRA’s retrospective championship project. Please check our website tomorrow night after the BCS Title Game for the organization’s final 2010 poll.

2007 CFRA National Champion- LSU
January 8, 2011 | Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Louisiana State Tigers as its 2007 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- LSU (12-2)- 11 votes
- Georgia (11-2)- 2 votes
- Missouri (12-2)- 1 vote
- Kansas (12-1)- 1 vote
The 2007 CFRA poll is the only edition in this retrospective series in which four different teams garnered first-place votes. This voting distribution characterizes the chaotic nature of the 2007 national championship race in which the top 6 teams in both the AP and Coaches Polls finished the season with two losses. The CFRA poll is also similar to the final AP Poll for that season in which four different teams received first-place votes and LSU finished at # 1 followed by Georgia at a distant # 2. One difference though is that LSU, Georgia, Kansas, and Southern Cal were the four first-place vote-getters in the final AP Poll, whereas, Missouri received first-place votes here instead of USC.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in which a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. 2006 CFRA National Champion- Florida

The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Florida Gators as its 2006 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Florida (13-1)- 10 votes
- Boise State (13-0)- 5 votes
This poll is similar to the final AP and Coaches Polls of 2006, which also elected a one-loss Florida team as the champion of college football. One difference here is the CFRA’s more favorable treatment of Boise State. The Broncos went undefeated throughout the 2006 season, and you will remember won the Fiesta Bowl in dramatic fashion over Oklahoma. However, they only garnered one total first-place in the final AP and Coaches Polls and did not finish higher than fifth in either set of rankings. CFRA voters, however, ranked Boise # 2 and awarded them five first-place votes.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in wh a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Texas Longhorns as its 2005 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Texas (13-0)- 15 votes
This CFRA poll emulates the final AP and Coaches Polls of 2005 which both unanimously voted Texas as the # 1 team in the country. The 2005 Longhorn squad is the most recent unanimously-elected CFRA national champion.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in which a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. 2004 CFRA National Champion- Southern Cal
January 5, 2011 | Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Southern California Trojans as its 2004 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Southern Cal (13-0)- 8 votes
- Auburn (13-0)- 5 votes
- Utah (12-0)- 2 votes
Both the AP and Coaches Polls also elected Southern Cal as its national champ. However, there is quite a bit of disparity between the vote totals in the 2004 CFRA poll and those found in the two other mainstream national polls from that season. You may recall that Auburn, Southern Cal, and Utah all finished unbeaten in 2004. However, because Southern Cal won the BCS Title Game, they won the national championship in near unanimous fashion. Such was not the case in this retrospective 2004 CFRA poll. First of all, Auburn garnered five of fifteen CFRA first-place votes and only fell three votes short of winning the 2004 CFRA title. However, the Tigers only received 3 of the 123 total first-place votes in the final AP and Coaches polls. In addition, Utah was also treated much more favorably by the CFRA, as they received two first-place votes and finished at # 3 in the overall CFRA rankings. On other hand, Utah did not receive any first-place votes in the final AP or Coaches Polls for 2004 and finished as low as 4th in the AP rankings and 5th in the Coaches.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in which a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. 2003 CFRA National Champion- LSU

The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Louisiana State Tigers as its 2003 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- LSU (13-1)- 10 votes
- Southern Cal (12-1)- 5 votes
You may recall that the 2003 season resulted in split champions, as Southern Cal was voted in as the AP # 1 and LSU as the Coaches # 1. As you see above, the CFRA sided with the Coaches Poll by electing the Wolverines as the champs. This vote is an historic one for the CFRA, as it marks the first-time since 1954 that the CFRA has voted alongside the Coaches Poll in a split championship situation. There have been eleven seasons where the writers and coaches have elected different national champion, and for nine consecutive co-championship seasons, the CFRA either voted alongside the AP poll or elected their own champ. However, that streak comes to in an end with the CFRA’s selection of LSU as its 2003 champ.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in which a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Ohio State Buckeyes as its 2002 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Ohio State (14-0)- 13 votes
- Miami-FL (12-1)- 2 votes
The AP and Coaches Polls of 2002 also elected Ohio State as # 1, after their narrow defeat of Miami in the BCS Title Game. However, both of those polls unanimously elected the Buckeyes as champions, and here the Hurricanes were able to garner two first-place votes despite their loss to OSU. This marks the only time that a bowl game loser received first-place votes in this retrospective CFRA championship project.
I hope you will continue to follow the CFRA’s retrospective championship project in which a different champion will be revealed and recognized each day from December 26th until the night before the title game. - Miami-FL (12-0)- 15 votes
This CFRA poll emulates the final AP and Coaches Polls of 2001 which both unanimously voted Miami as the # 1 team in the country. The 2001 Hurricane squad is the third of four unanimously-elected CFRA retrospective national champions between the years of 1993 and 2008.

The College Football Researchers Association has elected the Oklahoma Sooners as its 2000 college football national champion.
Here is the first-place voting breakdown for this season:
- Oklahoma (13-0)- 15 votes
This CFRA poll emulates the final AP and Coaches Polls of 2000 which both unanimously voted Oklahoma as the # 1 team in the country. The 2000 Sooner squad is the second of four unanimously-elected CFRA retrospective national champions between the years of 1993 and 2008. Interestingly enough, the first two schools to accomplish this feat are from the same conference (Big 8/Big 12).
