2018 College Football Researchers Association (CFRA) End of Regular Season Poll

For the first-time since 2014, the CFRA has selected a different “best four teams” than the playoff committee at the end of the regular season.  That season TCU got the nod at the # 4 spot despite the committee controversially selecting Ohio State.  This season, the CFRA has made a statement by ranking the UCF Knights as the # 3 ranked team in the country at the conclusion of the regular season.  It will thus be interesting to see if they can hold off # 4 Notre Dame or # 5 Oklahoma, if the Knights beat LSU in the Fiesta, and # 1 Alabama and # 2 Clemson falter in the playoffs.  Without further ado, here is this year’s CFRA Final Regular Season Poll.

2018 CFRA Player of the Year Award

For the seventh consecutive season, the College Football Researchers Association has crowned a Player of the Year, and this season Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa takes the title by the narrowest of margins.  Tua bested runner-up Kyler Murray by just two points in a race where Murray actually garnered more first-place votes than the Alabama quarterback.   In five of the past six seasons, the CFRA Player of the Year has gone on to take the Heisman Trophy, with the one exception being Deshaun Watson in 2016 who most likely would have won the Heisman if the poll was conducted after last year’s playoff.  The full breakdown of votes is below with the number of first-place votes each player received in parentheses:

2017 Final CFRA Poll

First of all, I want to thank all of the CFRA voters and followers who make this poll possible.  We could not do it without your enthusiasm and support for this great game.  As expected, Alabama was selected as the CFRA national champion for the 2017 season marking the 13th time they have claimed this honor and the 148th overall national champion selected by the College Football Researchers Association.  Interestingly, UCF made a valiant run at the title by claiming 40% of the first-place votes.  However, the Knights couldn’t rise any higher to # 3 in the poll thanks to two voters who ranked UCF outside the top 5 and one who ranked them outside the top 10.  “I think the UCF national championship campaign may have backfired and  caused voters who did not think they were fit to be champion to discriminate against them on their final ballots,” said CFRA Commissioner Brad Matthews.  “Even though I personally voted UCF # 1, Alabama is a deserving champion,” Matthews went on to say.  Here is this year’s complete final poll.

1.  Alabama (6)– 245 points

2.  Georgia– 233 points

3.  UCF (4)– 226 points

4.  Oklahoma– 217 points
